Training Mind, Body and SOUL
Self-confidence through self-defense training!
Self-confidence through self-defense training!
Keep fit, have fun, learn discipline, self confidence and self defence.
You don't have to be fit to start karate just willing to try hard and learn new skills. The fitness comes as you progress.
We teach Karate as a personal journey, whatever your route we will empower you to reach your potential and be the best you can be.
Our instructors are fully-insured, Enhanced DBS checked. and First Aid trained.
We are a friendly and welcoming traditional Shotokan Karate dojo based in Gloucestershire. We've been part of this community since 2003.
Our costs are transparent. There are no monthly fees, pay as you train. Children £3.50 adults £5.00. Family discounts available. The only other thing you will need is Annual association membership £25 and a Gi £12-£30. We have three grading s a year at a cost of £25 each.
Tamsin Grainger, Shodan & Ashley Grainger, Nidan
Ashley is a latecomer to karate, starting at 40 because his daughter Tamsin was in an after school karate club. We trained together and progressed together both getting our Shodan around five years later. Tamsin was only 10 at the time but was faster and more determined leading to being nicknamed Tiger Tamsin by our Sensei.
Shortly after passing Shodan we started our own dojo which became independent when our sensei retired. Named Tora which is Japanese for Tiger after Tiger Tamsin.
We teach solid basic karate, nothing special just the core Kihon, Kata and Kumite.
The club is run as a hobby not as a full time business so our focus is not on the profit but on seeing the students develop and grow in their confidence.
We do still maintain high standards. Everyone has to earn their grade and standing within the club. Some students are happy to progress within club by attending on a regular basis. Other students want to progress beyond that and enter competitions or train with other senior Sensei. All of which we encourage through our association membership. However you want to grow we are here to help you.

Please contact us if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Absolutely, the only way to know is to give it a go. We are happy to let you come along and see what happens and join in if you like. You can even have your first lesson FREE.
We all learn at different rates so it's impossible to be accurate. On average it should take about 5 years, training twice a week to get to the correct level to achieve your black belt. However this is often longer for the younger members.
We believe there should be no difference in the learning for children and adults. There may be differences in power and understanding that come with age, but if you are skilful enough to earn your grade then it doesn't matter how old you are.
You dont need to commit to buying a gi or licence until you have had a chance to see if you like it. Just train in suitable lightwegt sports clothing. After a month we woudl expect you to commit to a Gi and licence.
Though we have a good understanding of our students capability we think it is difficult to objectively grade your own students. To make sure our gradings are fair we work with other clubs within or association to organise gradings by an independent Sensei.
If you have questions send us a message. We will get back to you as soon as possible.
